The Classic Wine Trophy has a long-standing mission: to promote, recognise and reward wines of elegance, balance, finesse and the capacity to improve with time. With a panel of exclusively French judges the 10th Classic Wine Trophy has ended with a consensus of opinion that South African wines are as good as the best Europe has to offer.
Commenting on The Classic Wine Trophy 2007, co-organiser Christophe Durand said: "What we have seen in this year's entry line-up has been a compelling shift towards truly classic wines, created to age and endure.
The branding is also that of a highly sophisticated and mature producer market, which illustrates the confidence that South Africa's wine producers feel about their vintages,” he added. “While South African wines are, by their provenance, New World Wines, many of the entries in the 2007 Classic Wine Trophy competition can stand proudly in the company of the world's greatest classic wines."
And now more about the wine:
Only 3000 bottles were produced. The grapes were specially hand selected and picked from vineyards close to the riverbeds. 5 % Noble Rot grapes add to the complexity of this wine. This wine was barrel fermented in French Oak, and only barrels that received the approval of the Familie were selected. The final blend is 88% Semillon and 12% Sauvignon Blanc. The wine has an intense yellow-green appearance which reflects the grape integrity, with very subtle honey-lime-spicy aromas lingering in combination with the wood. The palate is explosive, but elegant with fruit opening up in bold expression of fresh ripe peach that is well rounded with lanolin and soft wood flavours that keep opening up. Layers of freshness! The palate confirms all that is picked up on the colour and nose. This wine has excellent maturation possibilities and is the ultimate food wine.
