Established in 1822, Deetlefs is the 3rd oldest wine estate under ownership of the same family in South Africa.
A joint venture with our farm workers resulted in an independent company in which a Workers Trust has 50% shareholding in the Rhythms of Nature label. The trustees, consisting of management and workers are responsible to control and manage funds which will mainly be invested in education for children and skills development for adults.
The message and basic principles of Fairtrade need to be communicated to the people buying our wines in various markets. It is an exciting journey from production to end consumption which in short ensures:
· Sustainable production – a long-term approach to the protection of our environment.
· That our business complies with the highest labour and legislative standards in the world.
· Fair trading and that our farms are audited annually.
· That for EVERY Fairtrade sale our farm workers receive a Fairtrade premium that they can invest in projects of their choice.
